A young shepherd in the field the night the Savior was born, Jude Thaddeus followed the Star of David to Bethlehem. He also had an image of the infant Christ on his chest. He was clubbed to death.
He was brother to James the Less and is said to have worked for the spread of the Gospel in Arabia, Mesopotamia, Persia, Syria and Armenia.
As an attribute, he has the club with which he was killed in Persia – a halberd or an axe.
A ship symbolizes his missionary travels.
Sometimes he has an image of Jesus on his chest, as he is said to have resembled Him so much.

According to legend, he was one of the shepherds on the fields at Bethlehem on the night when Jesus was born. P.B. shows him with an eight-pointed star (the star of Bethlehem).
